Deep Fauna and Deep Flora are twin albums featuring performances of jazz standards and original compositions by the experimental music duo Alfred Jarry (Eldritch Priest and Brady Cranfield). The titles of these albums allude to a way of looking (listening) more deeply into comminutes and forms of life as they might be ordered and expressed apart from humanity’s anthropocentric and exploitative purview. In this respect “deep flora” and “deep fauna” are metaphors for an aesthetic attitude that aims to skew prevailing genre conventions regarding what counts as a “song.” More specifically, in these albums Priest and Cranfield explore the line between free improvisation and composition to develop an approach in which traditional musical elements such melody and harmony are rendered not so much irrelevant to the making of a song as they are decoupled from each other and their mutually reinforcing roles. This is demonstrated on Deep Fauna in the way it moves between (mostly) highly distended but recognizable jazz standard’s by Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus and improvised tracks that express the moods if not the forms or “singability” of these songs. Deep Flora, however, departs more radically from Deep Fauna in its complete abandonment of harmonic material. Whereas the latter features guitar (Priest) and drum (Cranfield) performances, the former is a collection of improvisations on electronic horn (Priest) and electronic drum kit (Cranfield).

    These discs come in eco-sleeves.
